At some point in your life, you will probably obtain health insurance through Medicare. Whether you are turning 65, retiring from your career and losing employer-provided health benefits, or have become disabled, Medicare-related services will become a central part of your insurance portfolio, and it's important to know that you have options over and above Medicare Part A and Part B. Original Medicare by itself provides limited to no coverage for vision, dental and elective surgeries among other things, and most people require at least some assistance with those types of care. Medicare Advantage replaces Medicare with insurance provided by a private health insurance company. Insurance companies which offer Medicare Advantage must provide at least the same benefits as those provided by Original Medicare. In most cases, Medicare Advantage plans provide benefits over and above those provided by Original Medicare, sometimes at cost less than Medicare Part A & B! However, Medicare Advantage is not available in all areas and additional benefits provided by insurance companies are subject to change annually. For many people Original Medicare alone leaves a lot to be desired and Medicare Advantage may not be available, affordable or simply not a great fit. For situations like these, a Medicare Supplement (commonly known as Medigap) can be a great option. Medigap policies are standardized insurance policies which are purchased in addition to original Medicare. Medigap Plans are distinguished by letter (Plan A through Plan N) with the same plan letter providing the same benefits regardless of the insurance company providing the plan. Companies provide different levels of service and will charge different premiums, but benefits provided under the same plan letter, regardless of company, will always be the same. Only in limited cases does Original Medicare provide coverage for prescription drugs. Prescription Drug Plans (also known as Medicare Part D) are offered only by private insurance companies and can sometimes be combined with Medicare Advantage or obtained as a stand-alone policy. There can also be penalties for not enrolling in a Prescription Drug Plan when you first become eligible for Original Medicare, and so it is a good idea to consider obtaining some sort of Prescription Drug Plan when making your Medicare coverage elections.
